Distribution Transformers
3Si Eco Power design, manufacture and supply a range of distribution transformers for both Indian and international markets.
We primarily design and produce Energy Efficient Transformers to IS1180 Part 1 – 2014 and IS 2026. We also design and manufacture to other International Standards like IEC 60076, BS, European Union Eco design Directive of 548/2014 and other National Standards.
Distribution transformers are essential components in electrical power systems, responsible for stepping down high voltage electricity from transmission lines to lower voltages suitable for use in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. Here’s a brief overview:
Types
- Step-down Transformers: Decrease voltage levels.
- Step-up Transformers: (less common in distribution) increase voltage for specific applications.
- Single-phase and Three-phase Transformers: Depending on the application and load requirements.

Key Functions
- Voltage Transformation: They reduce high transmission voltages (typically ranging from 11 kV to 33 kV) to lower voltages (such as 400V or 230V) for end-users.
- Power Distribution: They help distribute electrical power across neighborhoods, industries, malls, hospitals and buildings efficiently.
Design and Construction
- Core: Usually made of silicon steel to minimize energy losses.
- Windings: Copper or aluminum wire windings; the primary and secondary windings are designed based on the required voltage transformation ratio.
- Cooling Mechanisms: Can be air-cooled or oil-cooled to dissipate heat generated during operation.
Applications
- Supplying power to residential areas, commercial establishments, and industrial facilities.
- Integration in renewable energy systems, like solar farms, wind farms to manage voltage levels.
Efficiency and Losses
- Distribution transformers are designed to be efficient, but some energy losses occur due to heat (copper losses in the windings and core losses in the magnetic circuit).
- Efficiency ratings are as per IS 1180 standards or as per EU norms or as per customer requirements.
Maintenance
Regular inspection and maintenance are crucial to ensure reliability and longevity. This includes checking insulation, cooling systems, and overall condition.
